Study Links Flexibility to Longevity: Insights from Dr. Reuben Chen

A recent study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found an association between poor physical flexibility and an increased likelihood of death in middle-aged adults. The research analyzed data from 3,139 individuals aged 46 to 65, revealing that lower flexibility scores were linked to a higher risk of mortality from natural causes. 

The study was covered in an article in Health, an online publication with a reach of over 120 million annually. Dr. Reuben Chen, Chief Medical Advisor at Sunrider International, provided insights on the findings, noting, “Flexibility often reflects an individual’s overall physical fitness and health status.” He added, “While inflexibility itself might not be a direct cause of mortality, it can serve as an indicator of broader health issues such as chronic conditions, sedentary lifestyle, inflammation and pain, and psychosocial factors.” 

To measure flexibility, the study utilized a 20-movement test known as the Flexitest, which assesses the range of motion of seven different joints. Dr. Chen emphasized the importance of flexibility, stating, “Greater flexibility can help prevent injury and make it easier for people to move in ways essential for healthy everyday living.” 

For those looking to improve flexibility, Dr. Chen recommends both static and dynamic stretching. Static stretches involve holding a position for 15 to 60 seconds, while dynamic stretches involve controlled movements that extend the range of motion. He also suggests incorporating yoga, which combines both types of stretching and strengthens the core.
