Dr. Reuben Chen, MD, Sunrider® International’s Chief Medical Advisor, was featured in Eat This, Not That!—a popular online publication offering practical health, nutrition, and fitness advice. The feature appeared in the outlet’s October 3, 2025 article, “How Much Walking Do You Need to Shrink Belly Pooch After 50?”

The article highlights the challenges of losing belly fat after age 50. Dr. Chen explained, “After 50, hormonal changes like declining estrogen in women and testosterone in men slow metabolism and promote fat storage, particularly visceral fat around the abdomen. A natural decrease in muscle mass reduces calorie-burning capacity, making it easier to gain fat.”

Dr. Chen added that “lifestyle factors such as reduced physical activity and poor diet can exacerbate fat accumulation, while stress and poor sleep increase cortisol, further increasing belly fat retention.”

To help counter these challenges, Dr. Chen emphasized that regular, moderate-intensity walking paired with a balanced diet can help adults over 50 burn calories, reduce body fat, and support cardiovascular health.

He noted that walking is one of the most accessible forms of exercise, offering a safe, sustainable, and low-impact way to improve fitness and maintain a trimmer, healthier waistline without placing undue stress on the joints or muscles.
